#4 Good Bye To a Decade

As the year ends, I thought it would be a good time to reflect and I found this article in Time magazine (link given below). Read the article then comment on what you read. After doing so, you will need to read some of your classmates' posts and comment on at least one of theirs. Keep in mind the grading criteria this time--Check your rubric carefully before you hit "post". Enjoy and of course---THINK.

I dont believe that this is the worst decade ever, just because of 9/11 and the fall of the economy. I believe that the 30's was the worst decade. I believe this because this country went through two world wars and a great depression. Many people lost their homes, and those who were fighting in the war lost their lives. Many families fell apart, some also went through bankruptcy because the banks fell with the economy, causing them to loose their homes.

  2. It may seem like the worst, but I don't think it is. The author is just speaking on the bad things that have happened, like 9/11 and the stock market crashes that have caused a recession. Also Hurricane Katrina looked bad for the United States, because these events effect the whole country in negitive ways. Their were worse times in the late 1920's during the great depression. After "World War 2". Due to the stock market crash on Oct.29.1929 known as "black tuesday".

  3. I agree with Dominique. This wasn't the worst decade ever.

The article said that bankers had an unsupervised free-market free-for-all when some of the problems it mentioned were caused by not having a free market. The Federal Reserve created the housing bubble and inflated the dollar by trying to control the economy. I think this is turning out to be a great decade because Congressman Ron Paul is gaining a lot of support to audit the Fed. Last year, nobody was thinking about an audit of the Fed, and now HR1207 has over 300 cosponsors and 8/10 Americans want an audit of the Fed. Ron Paul has at least got people talking about ending the fed and returning to a gold standard.

For myself, all I remember of the last decade is my trailer burning down, and now I live in a house, so this decade is pretty ace compared to that.

i agree with dominique because in the 1930's over 3/4 of the people in america had no jobs, most of the people was homeless. And half the people were bankrupt.

  5. I would have to disagree with Dominique Watley because I do believe that this was the worst decade ever. After reading the article it reminded me of incidents that has happened during this decade. For example, the T2 chemical explosion that happened in 2007, 9/11, and the down hill of the economy. There were many people that lost their jobs, houses, and loved ones because of the incidents I have mentioned.

  6. After reading this article, it made me think. Not of the past decade;it made me wonder what lunatics are now writing for TIME magazine. This article was horrible! It was a list of factual events from the past decade slightly organized in a chronological manner, injected with this persons clueless political views and dumbfound opinions. I almost thought I was reading a comic strip! The main idea was of course this past decade being a horrible one. I have to agree with THAT. But not from the writers one sided view, but from a wider perspective. Yes, many died for our country and I respect that. Yes, we are battling with blood-thirsty terrorists that deserve a bullet(war is not the name for it genius). But to label the people like Martha Stewart at ENRON and Bernie Madoff as the sole destroyers of this decade is poposterous and desecrating to all americans. Where was the great Condoleezza Rice during the Katrina tragedy? Shopping for shoes! Also, I didn't see much change coming from the great, all-mighty, Nobel Peace Prize winning, President Barack Hussien Obama during 9/11! Where was our savior? Funny contradiction, aye? Contradictions run this world. There is a contradiction making your head spin right now as you read this, and you don't even know it. This article is a contradiction; written by a contradiction; and believed by contradictions! Not the worst, but it was bad one. That's my opinion.

  7. Yes I can say that i agree with the article because of all of the horific things that have happened in theses past couple of years. But I think we were hit the hardest when the terroist hit the World Trade Center. That took a big toll for American people to overcome. And still today most Americans still aren't in their right mind because of this mishaps.

  8. I do believe this is the worst decade ever just because of everything that has happen
over this past period decade. Even though a few may say we fought no major wars but
the U.S was attacked by terrorist on 9/11 which started the war on terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan which cost thousands of U.S soldiers there lives which today we are still
fighting and losing Americans lives. Also On Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in New Orleans, killing more than 1,500 Americans and causing $100 billion in damages and the fall of economy which hasn’t been seen of sense the great depression makes the decade we’re living in the worst.

  9. To me 2000's was not the worse decade of the century. The things that happened in the year represents to me that somebody was not doing their job right. Lack of employment in the country and the lack of help towards people. I think the only reason many people is calling it the worse because of what the country is going threw and is the change going to happen. Many people are going crazy because they are losing their jobs and mainly homes. And nobody has no answer to the people that had jobs and then had to get fired because were in a recession.

  10. I think this decade was one of the worst decades in this country but to be quiet honest i think the all decades of slavery was the worst decades in this country . For four hundred years black people in this country have been lynched , murdered , beaten , kidnapped , forced to do back breaking labor , disrespected and formostly being taken their god given rights and freedoms away by the people who enslaved them . I think this was one of the worst decades but definitely not the worse .

Though this decade was also plagued with many maladies, such as an ongoing recession and the H1N1 influenza, America has made much progress as a nation and still has much to go.

And as for a drop in the economy we are far off better then the 30's. Theres a diffrence between a recession and a depression. overall though this decade might not be the best, but it is sure better off then most.

  18. This is in fact the worst decade in many peoples lives. Just go back on all of the things that have happended in the first five years. Terrorists attacked the world trade centers, Y2K, Hurricane Katrina. Every thing that could possibly go wrong in the world has already happened. We are in a recession right now because of the so called "work" that the past presidents have done. The 2001 terrorist attack still has thousands of US soilders over seas fighting for their lives. America is losing billions of dollars because of the attack. Hurricane Katrina was no better because were lossing millions of dollars for that and even more people lost their lives. It seems like only bad things have came out of this decade and hopefully the upcoming decade will be the total opposite of this one.

  19. You can't escape problems, they just happen and you either run away or face them straight on. It seems to be a five year trend since 9/11 happened, which happened to be in 2001 then as alex refered to scott about hurricane Katrinna which happened in 2005. Now we are in a recession. It's almost a repeat of The Great Depression, but just not as bad. As for my lifetime I would have to say that this decade is the worst that I have seen.

  21. This article captures each and every event that classifies the 2000's decade as the "decade from hell". historically, this decade is by far the worst decade the united states has seen post world war II. each event that was highlighted, from the 9/11 attacks to Hurricane Katrina to when when stock market crashed, lives in my memory very lurid. Hopefully the next decade will ease the hardships many americans endured post-millenia. I am glad that "TIME" magazine published this story. Past mistakes made in this decade shall be forgiven and reconstructed, but will forever be unforgotten.

  27. Yes I agree this has been the worst for the U.S. decade. My reason why is because look at what all we've faced in this period of time, 9/11 which caused thousands of people and which lead to the war that we're in today. Then Louisiana was hit hard by a deadly stormy called Hurricane Katrinna which took 1,500 lives and did so much damage that the a lot of places haven't fully recoverd from it.

  28. I agree with what a few people said about 9/11 and hurricane Katrina. I believe that these two major events, along with a few other big ones, contribute to this being the worst decade ever. On Sept. 11, 2001, when the Twin Towers were hit by the hijacked planes, it cause a great deal of damage. It was not only monetary damage either. It broke apart families as well, which in my mind is worse than losing the actual towers. Just like 9/11, hurricane Katrina also caused a great deal of damage. It cost billions of dollars to pay for the damages, and there was alot of damage that couldn't be fixed with money. Along with these two major catastrophies of the decade, there were also a lot of minor problems. So taking all of that into account, yes, i do agree that this is the worst decade we have ever had.

  29. I definitely agree Kevin, this was not the worst decade ever. Even thou we had so many terrible events that happen like the 9-11, Katrina, and ect none of these were worst than th 1930's. During the 1930's it included the Great Depression with 1/3 of all American people out of work and the Dust Bowl. Also during the Civil War in 1860s more than 600,000 people was killed. Also during that time slavery still existed and at the end of the decade there was a economic depression. So theres no way this could ever be the worst decade.

  30. I agree with both Dominique and Kevin. They made true valid points. If you think living in this decade was the worse you haven't been living long enough. People have been through a lot worse than we have with hurricanes and a recession but we call this decade a recession. These last few years is nothing compared to what others went through in the past nineteenth and twentieth century or even before them. We complain so much but I believe we have so much to be thankful for. You don't hear about people like Hitler in this time period and people getting hanged but you say we have been through so much.

  31. The article stated that this was the worst decade post World War II; and to that statement I have to agree. I think it has been the worst decade for the people living in America. Millions of people have been killed and injured from Hurricane Katrina, 9/11, and the war in the Middle East. People have also greatly struggled through two economic crashes. Like the article stated "Instead, it was the American Dream that was about to dim." This decade seemed to make it impossible to live the "American Dream" of having a home, being financially stable and feeling safe because so many problems arose. I agree with Scott that this wasn't the worst decade because of war. Other mishaps occured that caused the people to pay the price of the cursed decade.

  32. After reading this long boring Article I Horace Glover is offended from the harsh things that was written about this decade. I honestly think it was a good one despite the tragedies we had to occur on this great piece of land we call America. A lot of great things happened this decade; we had our country come together as one in 2001 after a tragic accident. We had our first black president to get elected in this decade also the college graduation has increased.

I mostly agree with what dominique watley said. This decade is not the worse one what about the late 70's and 80's? When crack and cocaine hit the street and the government was the main ones bringing it in to get more tax free dollars.

  33. After reading the article i disagree i dont think that this is the worst decade ever. Yes there's been a few big tragedies that took place which effected us as a nation. I also feel like we've had other things that have taken place that were just as bad as the attack on the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and Hurricane Katrina. For example we've also had World Wars 1 and 2 and The Great Depression which both effected our nation in a great way so i agree with Dominique there's been so many other tragedies throughout the decades so i feel like this decade shouldn't be singled out as the worst ever.

I believe you dnt agree with the trials and tribulations of this decade for the simple reason that your just a teenager and yu havent really been effected by it in the since of that yu dont pay any major bills or own lots of stock, or owning a house or something of that sort.. So yu really dont have the right to say this wasnt a hard time for the people of the world.. I would like for yu too tell me the last time your parents were killed by terroists frm crashing a plane into the world trade centers.. I wanna know how yu overcame racism contradiction liars and a messed up congress system to make president as well as speak for your people knowing what weve been through.. When was the last time yu walked outside scared knowing that yu finna get hit by a man wit sniper at anytim.. Tell me the last time your family was waiped away by a huge tsunami, or how all your parents told yu your gonna have to find your food because the stock market crashed and they have no money for themselves.. YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!!... Please dont pass judgement upon others who have suffered tremendously wen yur not effected at all and jus a bystander.. After reading everything in this article about the wars, 9/11, people getting killed in Iraq and even Hurricane Katrina I really think this has been the decade from hell. Then there were the diseases that broke out. SARS was becoming a big deal in china, then bird flu, and now we have swine flu. Sure in the past they had diseases, but not whithin a 10 year span. Sure there were wars, but again not in a 10 year span. All the bad things that have happened in the past has repeated itself and squeezed all of it into 10 small years.

I disagree with Billy, just because there was plenty of mishaps this decade, it does not make it the worst decade so far. The 1930s would have to be the worst decade so far. This would be because during the 30s there were to world wars, and a great depresion. On top of that many people lost their lives, homes, and families. But if you was to compare this decade to that decade, there would be no competition or what worse because the 1930s takes the cake.

As i read this article all i could do was agree with the article this decade has sucked!! from the 9/11 the attacks, the hard economic crash, the deaths of all the soilders in iraq, or everything else that happened in the first 10 years of 2000. This year has touched the lives of so many americans in a negitive way from the deaths of soilders and victums leaveing behind broken family and friends. And the finacial issues caused by the econimic crash that has left many families struggling finacialy. But then i began to think and maybe this was jjust what america needed to get bcak to our roots of lovieng and care and not alll of this selfish mind frames that seem to rule our nation now. I believe these horible years have brought many americans togethr because we can relate on all the hard times and mourn with one another. I believe that is wat will make 2010 a better decade if we can seem to come together as a nation instead of millions of individuals trying to get our way.

For example the value of your house, if you haven't already lost it due to foreclousre, that the value of your home has fallen by 25%, and that's not good.

We have been attacted aroumous times, but the worst attacted to me as the 9/11 which as put any and everbody at war. the 9/11 has made a big part in war that is still over our heads today.I really feel as of right now that our decade is killing plenty of people and still is, and thats really enough for me to speak and say that this decade isn't anything to be proud about.

  59. As I read the article, I felt like this journalist honestly did not know what he was talking about. Yes we went through wars with Iraq, 9/11, and hurricane Katrina. Did we forget about hurricane Andrew that hit Florida? That had just as much damage as hurricane Katrina. so, I disagree when it comes to what Alex P., Billy M, TaPorscha M., and everyone else who said that this decade has been the worst decade. Just because we been through some major economic problems and wars, that doesn't show that this has been the worst decade. Before the 90's babies were even born, there has honestly been some major economic and social problems. For instance, we had to go through the fact that our nation was actually divided up into two seperate colors or race. We're not going through that anymore, or atleast not as noticeable or that much. Not only that, but we had to go through slavery and poverty. Than on top of that, we went through the great depression, 2 World Wars, right's for women, and had to fight for our freedom in the United States. So someone please explain to me how this was our worst decade yet? Plus, the problems I just stated, most of them was in a 10 year decade also. So I ask people, please take a look at your history books yet another time. Cause i state that this has not been the worst decade ever. And "This I Believe!!"

After reading this article I feel like this is the worst decade ever. I say this because this is the decade which we had 9/11 which was a slap in the face for America and home security . Many lives were lost in that attack. Another point to it being the worst decade is that hurricane Katrina struck killing more than 1500 people can costing over $100 billion dollars in damages the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. To top it all off the falling of the tock market and the recession we are in while still using billions on the war in Iraq. You put that all together I believe we are in the worst decade ever.

  62. I enjoyed reading this article and I am going to have to agree with Adrien Singleton. He says that this is the worst decade ever all because of 9/11 and other disasters that has happened. My opionion is that the past decades did not go through as much terror as we have gone through. In order to provide a better decade we need to as Obama says "Make A Change". Our world as we know it is coming to an end. Sure technology is advancing and they have better plans for the future, but answer this "Will it benifit our decades to come"?

  63. I, for one, agree with TaPorscha. The wars, the natural disasters, and the economy dropping like the H-bomb, is really destroying us as a nation. Hurricane Katrina, wiped New Orleans off the map,(figuratively speaking), but after that form of terror, people are killing each other because they are either mad because they lost a lot or just trying to show that they are bad. The war in Iraq, killing off our loved ones. Government is not making it better for us our them because they are sending more and more soldiers out to fight. Do they not know that these are people we care for? Do the government care about us hurting? While our loves ones are out there fighting and dying for us , our country, we are suffering from a recession. This is hitting the U.S. where it really hurts, our pockets. The recession is causing homes to be foreclosed, people killing themseleves cause they believe that they and their family wont make it through this recession, and others are losing their jobs. At this rate food stamps will be gone, and so what will the government do next?

  68. Looking back at this article I do believe that this was the worst decade ever. People lost many lives in 9/11, hurrican Katrina, and in the war. Right now the economy is bad and we're in a resession. "Our national psyche has been damaged as much as our national economy" this is a quote out of the article and I believe that our economy is badly damaged. Everything in this article I can relate to that this was the WORST decade ever. Millions of people lost their homes, family, and their life alone. We lost more money in this decade then ever.

I can comment on Taporscha M. blog because we both believe that this was the worst decade ever.

  69. I have to disagere with this article I don't think this was the worst decade, because just because the events happened doesn't mean it has been the worst times. I'm sure in the past decades there have been many other tragic events such as the Columbine incident where the kids were killed in bunches and bunches. And also the economy crashed back in the 1930's and 40's. This also caused Dust Bowl which killed everyone's crops and led to much deprivation. Which proves my point that the 2000's was not the worst decade.

I feel like these events have taken a major toll on the united states:many people have and still are suffering from this economic crisis. No one has a job so they cant afford to buy food or even clean clothes. The terrorist attacks made the americans scared and many of us thought that the attacks would be the end of the world. Many people lost family that were in the military. A still to this day i do not know the real reason that we are over there fighting. So in my opinion i do feel like this the worst decade ever.

I agree with the article, this really has been the Decade from Hell. Like TaPorsch states, all the events like terrorist scares like anthrax, 9/11, and war, to Hurricane Katrina has put a huge strain on the nation and its people. Also even though some of these evants are over they still effect us. For instance, the war with iraq still goes on and 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina was a major cost budget greating affecting the economy.

  75. I believe that this was a bad decade. But not the worst, at least not for America. I think that the civil war decade and even both the world wars are worse than 2000-2010, because there were more lives taken and more destruction to America in the civil war and even more to the world during WW1 and WW2.

It all started from the Y2K computer meltdown to Hurricane Katrina costing the U.S. almost 100 billion dollars in damage. We have went through 2 massive wars, a Great Depression, and now we're in a Recession. I believe that even though this was the worst decade ever. 78. To be completely honest in my opinion this has not been our worst decade ever. Many people exaggerate what has happened. Yes I have to agree that we have had a pretty rough decade but, what about other decades that have had disasters such as war and economical downfalls. This decade has hurt many families due to death from war and hurricane Katrina as well as losing a home and/or other valuable things many people find comfort in. What about people in the past who have lost a home and/or family members due to a catastrophe, they also believed they had the worst decade ever. To me it is a opinionated question to ask if we have had the worst decade ever. If someone has personally experienced something happen to them during this decade then they will most likely agree with the article. Everyone should always remember that things can always get worst, so be thankful that it is not indeed worst.

However I do agree with Ariana M, our decade has been bad. It is true that all man-made institutions are not perfect and they do have flaws. The absolute example of it is when the chemical plant here in Jacksonville, Florida blew up and killed men that were working in the plant. Man made the chemical plant and thought it was perfect to be comfortable around, but when it was least expected a tragedy happened and changed may lives forever.

The world is getting worse everyday so to say that the "00's" is the decade from hell is definately an opinion because the next decade is said to be worse than this decade. I agree with Kevin when he said that its going to get better because of Ron Paul and his plan to audit the Feds. I believe that the best brings out the worst and that in the 30's we had a bad time and we're having a bad time now and i'm sure this won't be our last. All the gloom and doom that this decade has brought upon us, and has given those whom believe 2012 is the end of the world, is now history. Yes, it is tragic. Those who were lost will be missed and never forgotten. However, we as citizens of America need to come together as a nation and look towards the future and learn from mistakes, such as listening to warnings of insufficient structures, and look at making this nation better and rebuilding our economy, as well as our patriotism.

As I was reading "The decade from hell" article,I found it interesting because the title fits the text.I believe that the 2000s decade is definitely the worst. Hurricane Katrina alone was one of the most tragic events that I witnessed. The major event killed more than 1,500 Americans in New Orleans and many without food, clothing and shelter.
Adding to the 2000s history are families of thousands of 9/11 victims and soldiers and many others who where killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. This decade is awful! even the wall street crisis was a hassel. The U.S has endured two market crashes followed by the economy going into a recession.
The recession simular tro the depression left housing forclosed, budget cuts, unemployment rates climbing to 10.2%. This resulted in Americans living below the poverty line. Meanwhile the percentage of Americans with health insurance increased.

  90. The article stated that this has been the worst decade post World War II; and to that statement I have to agree. I think it has been the worst not because of conflict, but because so many American's lives have been impacted negatively. Between 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the war in the Middle East; millions Americans have been killed and injured. Also, as the article stated we have been hit by two economic downfalls during this decade. So many people have loss their homes and jobs. I agree with TaPorscha and Scott when they say that it's been the worst decade because of so many mishaps that just seem to make it impossible to live the "American Dream". Yes there is always going to be people dieing in the world from tsunami's, hurricanes and tornado's but taht is always gonig to happen. That I believe all this is happening for a reason. Like the Great Depression which was in the 30s, was the biggest crisis this country had. There was a lot of people out of homes, had nothing to eat, had no money at all, and there was still a sense of segregation as well! In this decade, the country went through several terrist attacks. Yes now people are on the streets, but there still a lot of people with money and jobs. To top it off, there is no more segregation now.
